2017 $5 Cook Islands Remembrance Poppy. 999 Silver CoinRed remembrance poppies are frequently displayed in Anglo-Saxon culture to commemorate fallen soldiers and service personnel. The custom originated in 1921 after American humanitarian Moina Michael lobbied to have the poppy officially recognized as the symbol of remembrance for veterans. She was inspired by Canadian John McCraes poem “In Flanders Fields” which he wrote in 1915 during World War I. Remembrance Day is commonly celebrated on November 11 in Commonwealth countries.
