First Silver 999 coin issue dedicated to the world’s most popular handwork, the Murrine Millefiori of Murano in Italy. Each coin is unique, the glass rods are handmade, cured and then cut into discs. After that the individual multicolored glass discs are placed into a mould, heated gently and slowly melted. A new coin concept for collectable masterpieces. Limited mintage of 999 pieces worldwide. The coin’s reverse features the handwork Millefiori Murrine glass all around the edge. A heart shape made in Millefiori Murrine glass and the inscriptions “Murrine”, “Millefiori”, “Glass Art” and the issue date are in the center. The finished artwork explains without words why Millefiori means “thousand flowers” in Italian. In the coin’s obverse the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the face value and the issue country. The Murano Glasses Murano glass is glass made on the Venetian island of Murano, which has specialized in fancy glasswares for centuries. Muranos glassmakers led Europe for centuries, developing or refining many technologies including crystalline glass, enamelled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine), multicoloured glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass. Today, the artisans of Murano are still employing these centuries-old techniques, crafting everything from contemporary art glass and glass figurines to Murano glass chandeliers and wine stoppers, as well as tourist souvenirs. Today, Murano is home to a vast number of factories and a few individual artists’ studios making all manner of glass objects from mass marketed stemware to original sculpture. The Museo del Vetro (Glass Museum) in the Palazzo Giustinian houses displays on the history of glassmaking as well as glass samples ranging from Egyptian times through the present day.
