This Cook Islands proof coin. Has been struck as a tribute to “Lady Godiva” (circa 1898) by a British writer and painter in the Pre-Raphaelite style John Maler Collier. The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is traditionally displayed on the obverse of the Cook Islands coin. There are also the legends denoting the name of the Queen, the face value of the coin and the name of the issuing country. The beautiful reverse design features the colored image of Colliers legendary painting that depicts Lady Godiva, or Godgifu in Old English, a Saxon woman who was the wife of the Danish Lord Leofric. Above the image, there are the inscriptions indicating the name of the series and the issuing year; the lower part of the silver coin includes the name of the great artist. Godiva known as Lady Godiva was an 11th-century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who, according to a legend dating back at least to the 13th century, rode naked through the streets of Coventry in order to gain a remission of the oppressive taxation imposed by her husband on his tenants.
