COOK ISLANDS 1 Dollar 2009 Cook’s Cottage. Known as “the oldest building in Australia”, the cottage was the family home of Captain James Cook’s parents and was taken apart brick by brick, transported from England and rebuilt in Melbourne’s Fitzroy Gardens. The cottage was officially unveiled in 1934 as the focus of the centenary celebrations of European settlement in Victoria. Captain James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.
