In this song the protagonist is presumably a British soldier fighting in a battle against Russians. The song describes in detail the battle as it unfolds. This song was from their wildly successful 1983 album, Piece of Mind. This album went on to sell an estimated 13.5 million copies. The Trooper was released as a single and the cover featured Eddie, an icon for the band, wearing a British uniform. He is holding a tattered Union flag in one hand and a sword with blood dripping from it in the other. Around him are the bodies of fallen soldiers.
