This is 2016 Cook Islands The Great Tea Race of 1866 1/2oz. 999 Silver Coin- NGC graded as PF70 Ultra Cameo. With coa and package. This the Great Tea Race series contain 4 pieces of coins: 8 g, 1/2 oz, 1 oz and 2 oz. In 1866, some of the fastest clippers carrying cargo competed in a legendary sailing race. The aim was to transport the eagerly awaited tea crops from China to Great Britain in the shortest possible time. After 99 days on their home-bound journey, the two fastest ships the «Taeping» and the «Ariel» arrived with a mere time difference of 25 minutes. The design of these coin issues is based on the oil painting by famous British maritime artist Jack Spurling. It shows the close finish between the two ships in the English Channel after a three-month head-to-head race, depicting their full sails with an astonishing high relief. The 1/2 oz coin depicts one of the ships of the Great Tea Race with an ultra high relief. The Great Tea Race of 1866 was a race between merchant sailing ships from China to London. Nine of the fastest clippers competed with each other in this sailing regatta. Their goal was to take the so much awaited first tea harvest of the season from China to the UK in the shortest time possible. With fully set sails, these sailing ships were a very impressive sight – and that’s precisely what this coin tries to capture in a small area. What’s impressive is that the coin, with its height of 38.61mm, feels very light – despite its relief. Another striking feature that shows what Smartminting is capable of. This technology was used to create this beautiful coin to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Great Tea Race. And what was the result of the race? The two fastest ships were the’Taeping’ and the’Ariel’. The journey home took them 99 days. The time difference between the two ships was only 25 minutes.
